I Was Migs...

“I created Migs Mello for the kid I used to be — and the adults who want to do better.”

I was the kid who felt everything too deeply. Whose emotions came out big, messy, loud, and overwhelming—not because I wanted attention, but because I didn’t yet have the tools or words to say, “Please don’t give up on me.”

I was labeled, misdiagnosed, and excluded at school, at home, and in life. And the people I loved didn’t know how to help—so I was left behind or pushed away.

It wasn’t until seven years ago that I received an accurate  diagnosis. I finally had language for my pain. And with that came deep grief—for my inner child, for all the moments I was punished instead of supported, for all the “too much” labels I carried for decades.

I wish someone had explained that my brain was wired differently. That trauma, neurodivergence, and even a coma I survived at 14 may have shaped how I felt, reacted, and loved.

I created Migs Mello because I want today’s kids—and the adults who guide them—to have what I didn’t: a language of compassion. Tools that demystify big emotions. And most of all, squishes—the hugs, validation, and patience that can change everything.

And while my disability may be invisible to others, I’ve carried its weight every single day. But I’ve also carried something else—my Migs Mello spirit. That same part of me that wanted to be seen, understood, and valued? That’s the part that gave me the fortitude to keep showing up. To get back up every time society tried to knock me down.

Migs Mello isn’t just a character. He’s my story, rewritten with hope—and maybe, yours too.

"As a parent of a neurodivergent child now in his early twenties, I can honestly say I wish Migs Mello had been around sooner. When I shared the Migs Mello book and songs with my son - he said, "Wow! I wish I had this in school.  I do think this is a great story for young kids, because in my opinion there needs to be more psychological stories for kids on how to feel or what to do if they're feeling the way they're feeling. I do like the songs too, almost feels like something you would hear on Playhouse Disney. Overall - really great story."

- R.Fisher, parent of a young man with Autism

"As a primary care physician who works closely with children and families, I see firsthand how early emotional challenges can affect physical health, learning, and relationships. The Migs Mello book and curriculum fill a critical gap in care—translating brain science into tools kids actually understand. It empowers families, schools, and therapists to address emotional regulation before it becomes a crisis. We’ve needed a resource like this for a long time, and I truly believe Migs Mello has the potential to transform how we support mental wellness from the ground up."

- Dr. Gregory Serfer, MD & Mental Health Advocate

"Migs Mello is the emotional support tool I wish I’d had years ago, when I was working with younger families. So many of my young clients struggle to name or explain their feelings—and this curriculum gives them the language, the visuals, and the safety to do just that. It’s playful but profound. Migs helps children externalize big emotions in a way that feels non-threatening and even fun, which is exactly what’s been missing from many SEL and therapy tools. This program is long overdue and deeply needed."

-Sara Abbott, MSW, LCSW, LICSW

"As someone who taught social and emotional skills in schools for years, I can tell you—this is the tool we’ve all been waiting for. Migs Mello takes everything we try to teach kids about emotions and makes it visual, relatable, and actionable. The story, the language, the activities… it meets kids where they are and gives teachers what they need without adding to their burnout. I only wish I had this in my classroom sooner. It’s the kind of resource that changes the emotional climate of a school."
